John Tusa asks Danny Morrison, spokesman for Provisional Sinn Féin, if the death of IRA hunger striker and MP Bobby Sands has achieved anything for the republican movement.

Morrison responds that Bobby Sands began his hunger strike two weeks before the others in the hope that his death would lead to a settlement of their five demands and save the lives of the other hunger strikers. He also states that the responsibility for Sands’ death lies not with Sinn Fein but with the British government.

Continuing, he argues that republicans on hunger strike are not ordinary criminals but political prisoners. He believes that the British government is at war with the IRA, and therefore that each IRA killing is a political event.
