Conductor Douglas Boyd joins the orchestra for an afternoon of music from its Salford studio.
As we approach 'Berlioz 150’ - marking the 150th anniversary of his death in 2019 – today’s programme explores some of Berlioz’s lesser-known music and the legacy of his influence on later composers.
This afternoon includes Berlioz's overture inspired by the heroic Scottish clansman Rob Roy and the Scherzo from 'Roméo et Juliette: Queen Mab'.
Baritone Marcus Farnsworth performs the Jean-Paul-Égide Martini penned french love song "Plaisir d'amour", arranged for orchestra by Berlioz in 1859.
Cellist Istvan Vardai takes the solo part in Dutilleux's 'Tout un monde lointain...' (A whole distant world..., considered one of the most important 20th-century additions to the cello repertoire, each of the five movements a meditation on poems by Baudelaire.
