What notifications will I receive from the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds app?

We use notifications to let you know when new episodes of your favourite shows are available. We’ll also suggest programmes we think you’ll like. Our suggestions come from what you love to listen to in the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds app, and from how you interact with all our services linked to your �鶹��ƵAV account.

How do notifications work for new episodes?

We will send a notification within 15 minutes of a new episode of a subscribed show becoming available on-demand. Tapping the notification will take you to the programme where you can select to listen to the latest episode.

If a new episode becomes available very late in the evening or overnight, we’ll send the notification in the morning to let you know.

How do I switch notifications on or off?

There’s a variety of options around where and how notifications are displayed on your phone or tablet. You can manage these on your device:

Amazon Fire: Go to Settings > Sounds and Notifications > Manage notifications > �鶹��ƵAV Sounds

Android: Go to Settings > Notifications > See all > �鶹��ƵAV Sounds

iOS: Go to Settings > Notifications > �鶹��ƵAV Sounds

Once you have enabled push notifications on the device, you can toggle them on and off in the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds app. Go to My Sounds > Settings and select Notifications.

To stop getting notifications for a particular programme, you can unsubscribe to that programme. This won’t affect notifications for other subscribed shows, or recommendations.

Why am I not receiving notifications?

For new-episode notifications, check to make sure you’re subscribed to the show you’re interested in. For more information on subscribing, have a look here: How do I subscribe to a podcast or programme?

Check your �鶹��ƵAV account settings to see if you’ve switched off personalisation. You need to enable personalisation to receive notifications for �鶹��ƵAV Sounds. Head to the Using the �鶹��ƵAV website to find out how to check your personalisation settings.

How can I find out what music was played during a programme?

You'll find tracklists for on-demand episodes of �鶹��ƵAV radio programmes which featured music, or our own �鶹��ƵAV Sounds music mixes.

On the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds website

Start playing an on-demand episode which featured music, or one of our music mixes
Scroll down to see the tracklist of the music played during that episode or music mix
The track that's currently playing will have orange sound waves next to it

On the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds app on mobiles and tablets

Tap on the programme or episode you're interested in
Scroll down the programme information to find the tracklist

If you're playing an on-demand programme, where available, you'll see the orange sound waves next to the song that's playing. If you tap on the black playback bar at the bottom of the screen, you'll also see the currently playing track displayed underneath the play/pause button.

You'll see the tracklist on the right-hand side

Can't see a tracklist?

This could be because the tracklist isn't available for that episode. If music was played during the episode, or tracklists are usually available for that programme, get in touch to let us know.

Looking for information about background or atmospheric music?

Sometimes music is taken from our internal production library which means it's not available commercially in the same way other music might be. It also means we may not have information such as track names or artists.

How do I use the sleep timer on the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds app?

You can use the sleep timer with the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds app on your Android or iOS device to stop the programme or live stream from playing after a certain amount of time. Here's how:

Start playing the programme or live stream you want to listen to
Open the full playback page by tapping the black playback bar at the bottom of the screen (this may open automatically when you start to play the programme)
At the bottom of the playback screen, tap the sleep timer icon ('Zzz')
Select how long you'd like the stream to keep playing before it switches itself off

To switch off or change the sleep timer, tap on the clock icon again (it'll have a countdown underneath) and then select Off, or choose a different time.

Dark mode

Create a play queue

Change playback speed
Choose the playback speed of on-demand programmes and podcasts. Check this page for more info: Can I change the playback speed?
Changing download quality
You can change the quality of your downloads. Have a look at the following page for advice on how to do that: Can I change the quality of my downloads?
Sorting downloads
You can sort your downloaded programmes by Added, A-Z or Expiry. Just go to My Sounds > Downloads and you'll see the sorting options in the top right corner.

Does the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds TV app have a screensaver?

The �鶹��ƵAV Sounds TV app has a Screensaver feature which will prevent screen burn on your TV when the app is left running for a long period of time.

The screensaver will kick in after 5 minutes of inactivity. Depending on what you're doing when it starts up, you'll either see the programme you're playing, recommended programmes or the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds logo.

The screensaver will slowly move. It might not be noticeable but don’t worry, it’s enough to protect your screen!

How do I subscribe to a podcast or programme?

There are several ways of subscribing to a podcast or programme depending on the device you're using. Click on the links to find the advice that best suits you:

Subscribe on �鶹��ƵAV Sounds

Subscribing on �鶹��ƵAV Sounds means you'll see a personalised feed of your favourite podcasts and programmes in My Sounds. You will need to download episodes individually.

On the website

Find the programme you want to subscribe to by searching or by choosing from the homepage, categories or schedules. Click Subscribe at the top of the episodes list.

You can also subscribe directly from the playback screen on any episode. Start playing the episode or programme, then click Subscribe at the bottom right corner of the playback bar.
On the mobile/tablet app

You can subscribe to a programme from either an individual episode, or on the programme page. Just tap Subscribe. You'll find the programme in the Subscribed section of My Sounds.
On the TV app

Click into the programme, then click Subscribe at the top. You'll find the programme in the Subscribed section of My Sounds.

Subscribe on a computer using an RSS feed

You can subscribe to a podcast by using an RSS feed. RSS feeds allow you to stay updated when something new, like a podcast, becomes available.

To be able to subscribe, your browser will need to be able to support RSS feeds. Many browsers will already be able to support RSS feeds by default, or you can choose an RSS extension. This is essentially an extra piece of software that can be easily added to the browser. You can find an RSS extension to suit you in your browser Settings > Extensions and searching for RSS, or online by searching for RSS + 'browser name'

To subscribe to an RSS feed, first, head to the programme website for the podcast you'd like to subscribe to. To find the programme website, start playing an episode of the podcast you're interested in. Underneath the playback window, you'll see Programme Website
Click into the Podcasts tab* then click on RSS
Once you've done this, your RSS extension will give you the option to subscribe to the feed either directly on the browser, or using a service of your choice
You can then find your subscribed RSS feeds by clicking on the extension

The process may differ depending on the browser, extension and service that you choose.

*If the podcast you've chosen doesn't have a Podcast tab, it's likely this is a �鶹��ƵAV Sounds Exclusive podcast, meaning it can only be downloaded using the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds app for mobile or tablet. In this case it won't have an RSS feed but can still be streamed on the website, or downloaded via the app.

Subscribe on a computer using podcast software

If you've got podcast software installed on your computer (such as iTunes, Juice or gPodder) you can use the URL for the podcast feed to subscribe to your chosen podcast.

Find the podcast you'd like to subscribe to on the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds website
Head to the programme website for the podcast you'd like to subscribe to. To find the programme website, start playing an episode of the podcast you're interested in. Underneath the playback window, you'll see Programme Website.
Click on the Podcast tab, then select RSS on the top right
Copy the URL from the page you're taken to
Paste that URL into the feed in the podcast software on your computer

Subscribe on an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch

You can subscribe to podcasts on the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds app. Or, on iOS devices, you can install a podcast app or use Apple's built-in Podcasts app which can be set to download episodes (you can set a limit to the amount you wish to automatically download) in the app's settings.

On the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds website, find the podcast you'd like to subscribe to (to find the programme website, start playing an episode and click 'Programme Website' underneath the playback screen.)
Click on Podcast on the programme website then, tap RSS
If you have the Podcasts app installed on your device, this will automatically open in the app

Alternatively, open the Podcasts app on your iOS device and search for the �鶹��ƵAV podcast you'd like to subscribe to.

Subscribe on an Amazon Fire or Android device

You can subscribe to podcasts on the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds app. Otherwise, you can install a podcast app on your device. Search 'Podcast' in the Google Play Store or Amazon Appstore to find a podcast subscription app. Most podcast apps have a setting which allows podcasts to download automatically. Then:

On the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds website, find the podcast you'd like to subscribe to (to find the programme website, start playing an episode and click 'Programme Website' underneath the playback screen.)
Click on Podcast on the programme website then, tap RSS
Your device will show you which app or apps you can use to start your podcast subscription - simply choose the app you want to use

Alternatively, open the podcast app you've installed and search for the �鶹��ƵAV podcast you'd like to subscribe to. Please note that the Google Podcast app is not supported.

If you're having trouble with your third-party podcast application or browser extension, you will need to contact the manufacturer. We can't provide technical support for third-party applications or software.

Can I use Android Auto or CarPlay with �鶹��ƵAV Sounds?

Yes, you can. The �鶹��ƵAV Sounds app includes support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

To enjoy �鶹��ƵAV Sounds’ in-car experience, Android owners can connect to a compatible car display on any Android phone running Android 5.0 or above. iPhone owners will need an Apple CarPlay equipped vehicle.

Here's what you'll see in the car-friendly view of the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds app:

Browse: Have a look through our simplified Podcasts, Music Mixes and Recommended menus
Stations*: Listen live to all of the �鶹��ƵAV’s national stations across the UK, as well as our Sounds exclusive stations.
My Sounds: Easy access to all of the radio programmes, podcasts and music mixes you're subscribed to or have added to your Bookmarks
Downloads: Offline playback of programmes you've downloaded onto the app

A simplified touch interface makes it easy to skip to the next episode or jump backwards and forwards 20 seconds within a programme on both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Android Auto experience also allows you to play and pause using your voice, so you can control the playback without taking your hands from the wheel.

*Please note, local radio stations aren't currently available on Android Auto or CarPlay.

At the moment, Google Assistant Driving Mode isn't supported, however we'll update this page if anything changes.

How do I use dark mode on �鶹��ƵAV Sounds?

You now have the option of switching the interface of the �鶹��ƵAV Sounds website and mobile/tablet app from dark text on a light background to light text on a dark background.

How do I switch to dark mode?

On the website

The light or dark mode is based on your device system settings. How you access those device settings depends on your operating system:

Mac
Settings > General > Appearance > Dark Mode (or you can choose 'Auto' if you want your system to schedule when dark mode is turned on)

iOS device
Settings > Display & Brightness > Dark (or 'Auto' if you want your system to schedule when dark mode is turned on)

Windows
Settings > Personalisation > Colours > Change the 'Default Windows mode' to 'Dark' (or 'Custom' if you'd like to customise your light/dark settings)

Android device
Settings > Display > Advanced > Set 'Dark Theme' to 'on' (or use 'Schedule' to customise your light/dark settings)

It's also possible to set dark mode within some browsers.

On the mobile/tablet app

Tap on 'My Sounds' at the bottom of the app
Tap on the Settings cog in the top right corner
Tap 'Dark Mode'
Toggle between 'Light' or 'Dark.'

Some devices will also have a 'Use device settings' option which means �鶹��ƵAV Sounds will automatically copy your device's light mode/dark mode settings.

How do I turn off programme recommendations?

You can switch off programme recommendations (which are based on what you've listened to) by switching off personalisation altogether in your �鶹��ƵAV account settings. For more information on how to do this, visit the Using the �鶹��ƵAV website.

Bear in mind, switching off personalisation will also switch off the ability for �鶹��ƵAV Sounds to remember how far through a programme you are so you can pick up where you left off. It will also remove personalisation within �鶹��ƵAV iPlayer, which you can read about here: Personalisation in �鶹��ƵAV iPlayer.

It may take a little while for any changes you make to come into effect, but you can speed things up by signing out of your �鶹��ƵAV account and signing back in again on all the devices you're signed in on.
