Si Me Matan: A Mexican protest movement and an anthem

In 2017 after a series of murders of young women in Mexico social media posts sprung up querying those women’s behaviour, commenting that they had been out too late, they had partied too much, effectively blaming the victims for their own deaths. The reaction to this commentary sparked a hashtag – #simematan. Silvana Estrada, a young Mexican singer-songwriter, who up until that point had been better known for her songs about young love and heartbreak now wrote a very different track, one that would unexpectedly become a women’s rights anthem across Latin America and beyond. Clayton Conn tells the story.
