Russian advance slower than expected
Combat between Russian and Ukrainian forces is continuing as the conflict enters its fourth day. The head of the regional administration in the eastern city of Kharkiv said Russian light vehicles had entered the city and fierce fighting was taking place. Air raid sirens have gone off in Kyiv this morning, but the centre is relatively calm.
Defence analyst Jonathan Marcus notes that although Russian forces have been reported in many cities, the expected thrust hasn't happened yet. Meanwhile, sanctions against Russia are building and in a major shift of policy, the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has said his country will now deliver weapons to Ukraine.
