Amanda Gorman: 'Excitement' and 'terror' when I found out Joe Biden wanted me to read
The performance by the 22-year-old poet, Amanda Gorman of her poem The Hill We Climb at Joe Biden's inauguration has won her much praise. The poem recalled the Capitol riots and looked to the future of the US. She says she "screamed and danced her head off" when she found out she'd been invited to read at the ceremony.
"What ran through my body was excitement and joy and honour and humility and also at the same time, terror and anxiety."
The reading of an extract from The Hill We Climb was recorded at Joe Biden's inauguration ceremony on 20 January 2021.
