Dmitri Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No 1 in E flat major (Prom 12)

The concerto was composed in 1959 for Mstislav Rostropovich, who committed it to memory and gave the premiere four days later.

Cellists consider it to be one of the most difficult works to play in the orchestral repertoire.
