Giovanni Sollima: Violoncelles, vibrez! (Prom 3)
One of Sollima’s most often-performed pieces. It exists in a number of different scorings. This version for four cellos and orchestra is receiving its premiere.
The composer and cellist Giovanni Sollima (a ‘crazy Sicilian’, according to his colleague Yo-Yo Ma) has combined his vocations as performer and creator from the very beginning. Nowadays his work extends from exploration of the Baroque composer Giovanni Battista Costanzi to writing music for film, theatre, dance and installations, as well as concert works. Drawing on a huge range of influences, from Baroque to world music to heavy metal, his music is regarded as ‘post-Minimalist’ and is perhaps best exemplified by Violoncelles, vibrez!, originally written for two cellos and orchestra.
