What is driving the rise in teenage girls' drinking?

Teenage girls in the West are emerging as problem drinkers and countries like the UK, Canada and Sweden have more fifteen year-old women who drink alcohol than anywhere else. That's according to a study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Teenage girls are catching up with boys in their drinking: boys used to drink more than girls, now they are drinking at the same level.

The rise is due to the fact that alcohol is becoming cheaper and is readily available, and young women are targeted specifically in advertising. The concern is that once addiction takes hold, it will be hard to shake later in life.
