What is happening to the Saiga antelope of Kazakhstan?

Steffen Zuther of the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity in Kazakhstan (ACBK) talks Roland Pease through his experiences of the devastating “die off” of, already critically endangered, Saiga antelope on the Kazakhstan steppe. A bacterial epidemic is thought to have killed over half the global population of these unusual-looking animals. The cause is not certain, but there is evidence that it is a non-infectious bacterial infection that could have been triggered by external environmental conditions.
