Jeremy Hunt: NHS trusts right to be concerned over rise in patient numbers

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt tells Today presenter John Humphrys hospitals in England haven't panicked over patient numbers after four trusts declared a 'major incident', meaning they requested extra support for demand in A&E services.

Figures due to be released by NHS England are expected to show A&E waiting times in England have fallen to their worst level for a decade over the October to December 2014 quarter.

Asked why there aren't enough emergency staff to deal with the rise in patient numbers, the health secretary responded: "The incentives aren't right...but the facts are in the Autumn Statement...we had extra resources available and we chose to back the NHS".
