Dylan Thomas reads In Country Sleep

Part 1 of a long poem written on Dylan Thomas’ first trip abroad - to Florence, Italy in 1947. He was very uninterested in Italian life, preferring to listen to cricket commentaries and write. The poem reflects on his relationship with his daughter Aeronwy, then aged 4 after reading her a bedtime story. It is viewed as being particularly striking for its portrayal of a conflicted, though caring expression of fatherhood. This reading by the poet comes from a recording transmitted on the Third Programme, broadcast on September 25th 1950.
