Gavin Esler reports that on Tuesday, 27th April, 1981 the UDA mobilised large numbers of men to the Shankill Road to show their willingness to defend loyalist areas amid rising tensions roused by the likelihood of the imminent death of hunger striker Bobby Sands.

Esler interviews John McMichael about the UDA's plans and intentions, and speaks to two residents of the Protestant Suffolk estate, an interface area that flanks Bobby Sands' family home in the Twinbrook estate, about their feelings on the current situation.
