Sarah Shourd, the American hiker who spent 14 months in an Iranian jail

SARAH SHOURD
Sarah Shourd was living in Syria and working as a teacher when she organised a hiking holiday in Northern Iraq. Walking on a marked trail in a popular tourist spot she was arrested with two others and taken to an Iranian jail. She spent 14 months in prison before being freed in September.

Sarah's fiance Shane Bauer and their best friend Josh Fattal are still being held in the prison and Sarah is now dedicating herself to working for their freedom. She says until they are released she is only one third free.

She tells Matthew how she coped with solitary confinement for twenty three hours a day and how in a snatched moment together Shane Bauer asked her to marry him. She also describes the awful dilemma of being set free whilst leaving Shane and Josh behind.
