One fast-rising star and one firmly established. The inimitable Patricia Kopatchinskaja returns to the festival for this concert with the Â鶹ÊÓƵAV Symphony Orchestra under the latest conducting sensation to have emerged from Finland, Tarmo Peltokoski. After soothing Vaughan Williams and stimulating Schoenberg, we hear Shostakovich’s symphonic bid to save his own life in the face of Stalin’s wrath. The composer’s Symphony No. 5 is his most enduring of all, a spiritual battle in which he disguises protest as praise, creating his most bracing and powerful music in the process.
