Shaun is live from Salford this week and has a chat with Seasick Steve in the final hour about Steve’s 9th studio album, Can U Cook? which sees Steve mixing up all of his much loved ingredients to deliver a fresh new record that’s full of sunshine as well as being a good ol' Seasick mix of boogie, blues, rock, Americana and folk music. The title track sees Steve serve up wise relationship advice with dirty guitars, big drums and a growling vocal in an infectious and electrifying Seasick Steve groove.
Produced and written by Steve, Can U Cook? was mostly recorded in a converted ice house on the dock in Key West, Florida with his longtime drummer Dan Magnusson a.k.a. Crazy Dan (“the guy’s dangerous but he's a nice fella, he’s just a little bit loopyâ€) and guitarist Luther Dickinson of The North Mississippi Allstars, and ex of The Black Crowes (“…the greatest living slide guitar player … he’s crazy too, he fits right inâ€). Dickinson is now part of the touring band for the forthcoming tour dates. When asked ‘why Florida?’ Steve explains, “Right at the harbor is where the actual studio was. There’s the boats, and there’s a place called Conch Republic, which is a restaurant. We could throw a rock from the studio into that place. And the studio’s an old icehouse - the boats would come in to collect ice to keep the keep shrimp cold. And then Jimmy Buffett, in the 80’s, made it into a studio, and it’s right there on the harborâ€.
Plus, Georgie Rogers has the Music News which includes news on Bon Jovi and The Specials, plus, Paul Smith's new solo album Diagrams is the Album of the Day.
