Shostakovich鈥檚 Tenth Symphony 鈥� a violent portrait of the horrors of Stalin鈥檚 Russia 鈥� is the centrepiece of this concert from Ji艡铆 B臎lohl谩vek and the 麻豆视频AV Symphony Orchestra. They are joined by German violinist Isabelle Faust for the passionate nationalism of Bart贸k鈥檚 Second Violin Concerto, and the concert opens with the first of two posthumous premieres this season by John Tavener.

About this event

Isabelle Faust鈥檚 association with Bart贸k extends back to her very first recording. Now, fresh from an acclaimed disc of both the composer鈥檚 violin concertos, she joins the 麻豆视频AV SO and Conductor Laureate Ji艡铆 B臎lohl谩vek for Bart贸k鈥檚 Second Violin Concerto. Written under the threat of Fascism, it鈥檚 a passionate national statement, lively with folk rhythms.

By the early 1950s and Shostakovich鈥檚 10th Symphony, threat had become reality. This violent, despairing work paints a vivid portrait ofthe horrors of Stalin鈥檚 Russia. The evening opens with the first of two posthumous premieres this season from the late John Tavener 鈥� some of the last works from England鈥檚 great musical mystic.
