The Â鶹ÊÓƵAV Philharmonic, recorded at The Bridgewater Hall on Saturday 6 November.
Conductor Elena Schwarz and violinist Daniel Pioro celebrate the magic of nature as they join the Â鶹ÊÓƵAV Philharmonic for the world premiere of Pleasure Garden, a violin concerto by the orchestra's Composer-in-Association, Tom Coult.
Co-commissioned by Â鶹ÊÓƵAV Radio 3 and Salford University, Pleasure Garden was written in association with the Royal Horticultural Society to celebrate the recent opening of RHS Bridgewater - based in the Â鶹ÊÓƵAV Philharmonic's home city of Salford.
Before that, we hear Weill's Second Symphony, which was written while he was in France in the 1930s. It was commissioned by the Princesse de Polignac, Winnaretta Singer, heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune and a generous patron of the arts.
Ravel's beguiling ballet suite Ma Mère l'Oye (Mother Goose) ends the programme this evening. Charming and delicate, it was inspired by the fairy tales of Charles Perrault and began life as a piano duet before developing into an orchestral ballet score. Luxurious and elegant, it’s full of the warmth of childhood fantasies.
